Cros-de-Cagnes

Le Cros-de-Cagnes is the seafront of the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.

Historically, Cros-de-Cagnes, like Cannes, was originally a fishing village. In the 1970s, Cros-de-Cagnes became a seaside resort, but although tourism now predominates over fishing, certain maritime traditions have been preserved. You can buy fresh fish at the fishermen’s market every day from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or for the early risers, right off the boat.

Nautical activities are now legion on the coast, from optimist sailing to jet skiing, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and other leisure activities.

Stroll along the pleasantly landscaped avenue du bord de mer for strolling, rollerblading or cycling.

Cagnes-sur-Mer also boasts one of the few dog-friendly beaches in France, opposite the racecourse near the mouth of the River Loup.

Château Grimaldi au Haut de Cagnes à Cagnes sur Mer sur la Cô

Haut-de-Cagnes

Perched atop the hill of the castle, this historic district of the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer was designated a “historic site” in 1968. Take a stroll along the steep, cobbled streets, and you’ll discover unusual houses, vaulted passageways and beautiful views of the Mediterranean and the Mercantour. This itinerary allows you to follow in the footsteps of the great artists who painted Cagnes-sur-Mer, including Renoir, Soutine, Derain, Johnson and Vallotton. 12 lecterns have been set up, representing reproductions of paintings by the great masters at the very places where the original works were created, and where the painters set up their easels. 2 other lecterns are located on the Domaine Renoir.

Musée Renoir and Château Musée Grimaldi

In Haut-de-Cagnes, you’ll also find the Château Musée Grimaldi. Built in the 1300s by the then Seigneur de Cagnes, Rainier Grimaldi, one of the ancestors of the famous royal family of Monaco, it was acquired by the town in 1937 and transformed into a museum in 1946, before being classified as a historic monument in 1948. Today it houses the Musée de l’Olivier, the Solidor donation and sumptuous Baroque painted ceilings.

The Renoir Museum is set in the heart of a magnificent estate planted with olive and citrus trees. Completely renovated in 2013, it is now presented in the same configuration as Pierre-Auguste Renoir lived in his time, during the last twelve years of his life. You’ll also find a fine collection of 16 original paintings and some 30 sculptures.
